A Survey and Analysis of Works for Guitar by Non-guitarist Argentinean Composers

Abstract

The extraordinary interest in the guitar in Argentina has deep roots in this country’s history. The guitar has been considered a national instrument from the nation’s inception. Argentina’s folk music has taken its shape with the guitar as the central instrument. Consequently, there have been many excellent guitarists-composers. However, this thesis is focused on how other composers, who did not play the guitar themselves, perceived the guitar. Most of their work remains almost unexplored by guitarists, even in Argentina. This study consists primarily of analyses of landmark works for solo guitar, beginning with the first known work, written by Juan Pedro Esnaola in the mid-19th century, to the compositions of the youngest generation of Argentinean composers. A list with all known works by Argentinean composers that include guitar in their instrumentation is also provided.
